Saltwells Wood LNR was given the UK-MAB Urban Wildlife Award for Excellence in 1992.

Description

Saltwells Wood was planted in the eighteenth century to disguise the scares left by coal mining and descendents of this original wood still survive today. The Nature Reserve is home to many species of woodland bird, such as Treecreeper, Jay and Great Spotted Woodpecker, and flora and fauna, such as Wild Garlic, Anemones and Bluebells.

Saltwells Nature Reserve is 100 hectares of woodland, grassland and scrub situated 2 miles south of Dudley, in the west of the West Midlands industrial conurbation. It is owned and managed by the Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council Saltwells Wood and became a local Nature Reserve in 1981.
